Blackfin Tuna have oval-shaped bodies, black backs with a slight yellow on the finlets, and yellow on the sides of their bodies. They are only found in the western Atlantic from Cape Cod
to Brazil.
Blackfin tuna hunt both epipelagic (surface)
and mesopelagic (deeper water) fish and squid.
They also eat crustaceans such as shrimp, crabs, amphipods, stomatopods and the larvae of decapods. They are a short-lived, fast-growing species. A five-year-old fish would be
considered old.
Birthday boy Brad wanted to celebrate turning twenty-five with a couple of his friends, out on the open water, fishing for a big one. We took them out to fish for tuna. The boat motored out past Caye Costa and into the Gulf of Mexico.
Brad’s buddy Tony nabbed the first fish,
a nice 20 lb tuna. Then the birthday boy got
his present - a 32 lb blackfin tuna! His friends helped him get it in the boat and the day was made. Happy birthday Brad!
